Life Insurance with No Medical Exam

If you were to make a list of fun things to do, “get a medical exam” probably wouldn’t appear on the first, oh, couple thousand pages. It’s invasive. It’s a hassle to schedule. You’re getting pricked with needles.

Not exactly how you’d spend a sunny afternoon of leisure, is it?

That said, it can be important. And if you’re getting a medical exam as part of getting a term life insurance policy, it’s a way of allowing your insurer to understand your level of health.

Do you have high blood pressure? What about high cholesterol? Are you on any medications you might have forgotten about during your application? The exam helps your insurer assess how much risk they’re taking on by insuring you — and if you’re applying for term life insurance from Haven Life, getting your exam has never been simpler or easier.

Still, we get it. For some of us, getting a medical exam is not worth it.

It takes too long. There’s the needles, not to mention providing a urine sample (which feels weird to even type out, let alone actually do). And did we mention the needles?

That’s why there’s Haven Simple, a no-exam term life insurance option for those who wish to bypass the traditional life insurance medical exam. We’ve offered it for a while — as you’ll see below, the reviews have been great — but now we’re upping the available coverage to [movie villain voice:] one million dollars. Pretty sweet, right?

Keep reading to find out if a $1 million no medical exam life insurance policy from Haven Simple is right for you. (And keep in mind: Issuance of the policy depends on your truthfulness during your application. We’ll bring this up again, in more detail, below.)

In this article:

What is Haven Simple?

Simply put (see what we did there?), Haven Simple is a no medical exam-required term life insurance policy. You apply for the policy and answer some basic questions about your health and medical history — note that you’ll want to be honest, as providing inaccurate information may be reason to cancel your policy or decline to payout the death benefit to your loved ones, which obviously you don’t want to do.

You’ll receive an approval decision in minutes, which means you might be covered in the amount of time you typically spend getting lunch. From there, you’ll also begin paying your monthly premiums until the end of the term. (These are level premiums, which means they stay the same throughout the life of your policy, even as you age.)

If you happen to die before the end of the term (and we certainly hope you do not), your designated beneficiaries will receive a lump sum payout of the value of the policy. Which, if you need any reminding, can now be up to $1 million.

Another fun fact about Haven Simple: It’s been recognized by top publications such as Wall Street Journal, Money, Real Simple and more. They have raved about those level premiums, and our no-cost accelerated death benefit, a bonus that many insurers make you pay for. (We don’t.)

In sum: No exam. Long-term coverage up to $1 million. Great reviews. What’s the catch?

Well, it’s not a “catch,” but it’s worth noting that bypassing a medical exam means you will probably pay more for coverage than you would with an exam-required term life insurance policy. That’s because your insurer is taking on additional risk by not verifying your medical data. (And that’s why many insurers cap no-exam policies at lower values, often around $25,000.)

Still, if you are honest during the application process, and an exam really isn’t right for you, Haven Simple is a strong option. If you decide that, actually, you’re willing to take an exam, affordable, convenient term life insurance coverage is available via Haven Term from Haven Life, and you can apply online in the time you’d spend on your next coffee break — and it will deliver even more peace of mind.

Who might need a $1 million no-exam term life insurance policy?

In general, a good rule of thumb is that you want policy coverage about 5 to 10 times your annual salary. That’s because, if something were to happen to you, your loved ones would need to replace your income. This money, known as the death benefit, can be used on anything your family wants to spend it on, from mortgage payments and tuition to groceries and even final expenses like burial and a funeral.

You will also need to consider how long you want your policy to last. Haven Simple is available in 5, 10, 15 and 20 year policies. People often decide to buy life insurance coverage that lasts until, say, their mortgage is paid off or their kids are through college — big expenses that would be made more challenging if you’re not around to help pay for them. Others might want a policy that lasts until their retirement, as a way of offsetting any losses to the family income.

If you have dependents, such as children or relatives with a disability, term life insurance can make a lot of sense. If you also have big expenses, like the aforementioned mortgage or college debt, term life insurance can help cover them in case you die before they’re paid off. Do the math, and it might turn out your salary and/ or expenses justify $1 million in term life insurance coverage.

What does a $1 million no-exam term life insurance policy cost?

It might sound strange, but you can get $1 million for a lot less than $1 million. To pay for a term life insurance policy, you’ll pay a monthly premium at a rate determined by your insurer’s underwriting process. The cost of life insurance is calculated according to your life expectancy, based on your level of health and medical history.

(This, again, is why it’s important for you to be truthful during your application — failure to do so might mean you won’t be issued a policy, or that it won’t be paid out in the event of your death.)

Again, these are level premiums, which means they stay the same over the term of your policy. To give you an idea of what those might cost, here is what an individual in excellent health — a non-smoker who is a healthy weight, with no known medical conditions, including high blood pressure or cholesterol — might expect to pay for a $1 million policy, based on their age and the length of the policy:

AgeGender10-Year Term15-Year Term20-Year Term
25Male$45.55

$47.86$52.48
25Female$26.05$27.27$29.72
35Male$47.05$49.44$54.22
35Female$34.30$35.99$39.35
40Male$94.30$99.31$119.88
40Female$71.80$75.56$91.01

Estimate based on pricing for eligible Haven Simple applicants in excellent health. Pricing differences will vary based on ages, health status, coverage amount and term length. Haven Simple is currently not available in DE, ND, NY, and SD.

Suffice it to say, we think term life insurance is worth it — your monthly life insurance premium is a small price to pay for the peace of mind that comes with knowing your loved ones will be taken care of in the event that the worst should happen to you.
